Closet Cubby

Materials Needed

1 2/3 yard 1st fabric (A)

2/3 yard 4th fabric (E)

2/3 yard 2nd fabric (B)

2/3 yard 5th fabric (F)

2/3 yard 3rd fabric (C)

1/3 yard 6th fabric (G)

2/3 yard 4th fabric (D)

6 – 9 3/4” square pieces board

Directions

Cut the fabrics in the following sizes:

A = 31”w X 52”l (cover)

B = six 11” squares (5 for left wall, 1 for hanger)

C = six 11” squares (5 for right wall, 1 for hanger)

D = six 11” squares (cube back)

E = six 11” squares (cube bottom)

F = six 11” squares (cube top)

G = six 4”X 11” rectangles (day flap)

Variations:    Two fabric cubby:

     A = 1  2/3 yd, cut one piece 31”X52”

      B = 2  1/3 yd.  24 – 11” squares and 5 - 4”x11” rectangles

   One fabric cubby:   4 yards fabric, cut all pieces

All seams are ½” seam allowance.  All hems are ½”.

Mark dots in corners of all pieces where seam allowances intersect.  Along the 31” lengths (top and bottom) of the outside fabrics mark the dots as follows.  First dot ½ from edge, second dot 10 inches further, third dot 10 inches further, fourth dot 10 inches further and/or ½ from other edge.   All seams will be stitched between the dots.

Hem one 31” side of ‘A’ piece. (Not end with dot marks.)

Hem three sides of one ‘B’ piece.

Hem three sides of one ‘C’ piece.

Hem one side of one ‘E’ piece.

Hem one side of all ‘F’ pieces.

Hem both 4” sides and one 11” side of ‘G’ pieces. (Flaps)

Variations:

 Flaps can be painted, or embroidered as desired.

 Flaps can also be left off completely.  If flaps are left off, all D pieces need hemmed at this time.

Cube Pockets

All seams will be stitched between the dots.   Attach the flap to the cube bottom pieces, matching the edge of the flap to the dots on the bottom piece.  Press towards bottom piece.  Repeat with all flaps.

Put a cube top and bottom together (wrong sides together) aligning unfinished edges and align the top hem with the seam of the flap.  Stitch between dots on all three unfinished sides.  (This stitching is optional, but recommended, at this time.  Stitching can reduce confusion of the pieces if they get separated.  If you prefer to just pin and stitch when you attach the cube walls you can.)  Repeat these steps, you will have six pockets.

Cubes

All seams will be stitched between the dots.   To form the cubes, you will attach the walls to the pocket pieces, right sides together on all pieces.  I prefer to start at the bottom and add layers as I go up: pocket, walls, pocket, walls etc.  To do this, begin with the pocket for the bottom cube and add a wall to the sides perpendicular to the hemmed edge, right sides together. Stitch between the dots.  Add the next pocket section to the walls of the first cube.  Add walls to the pocket/wall/pocket cube.  Continue the same steps until a 5 cube cubby has been formed.  You will have one left and one right wall remaining to make the hanger.  Press all seams up and topstitch in place.

Cube Backs

All seams will be stitched between the dots.   You will stitch a back to each cube with rights sides together.    I find it easier to start at the bottom of the cubby.  Stitch the bottom back of the first cube, then the top back of the first cube, then the bottom back of the second cube and so on until you have stitched the bottom and top of all backs.   (Press up and top stitch in place)  Stitch all the side seams on all of the cubes.  (Press towards the center, and top stitch in place.)

Hanger

All seams will be stitched between the dots.  You will sew the hanger pieces together, so that they will fit the hanger you choose to use.  To do this you need to lay your hanger on the hanger pieces; the hook of the hanger should be on the center, hemmed edge,

(Parallel to the un-hemmed edge) and a width of about 1 ½” of hanger should be on the hemmed edge.  Mark a line from along each side of the hanger.  This will be your stitching line.  Stitch the hanger pieces together, along the stitching line.  Turn and topstitch in place for additional stability.

Attaching Hanger

All seams will be stitched between the dots.  You will probably need to cut of an inch or two from the hanger pieces before adding to the cubes.  I have taken off 1 ½” on most of the ones I have made.  The easiest way to determine the best length is to press under the amount you think you will need to cut off, pin the hanger section in place and see how it hangs.  There is no right or wrong, pick a length you like.  When you have your hanger pieces the correct length, stitch to the top of the cubes, wrong side of hanger to right side of cube.

Attaching Cover

The hemmed edge of the cover is the bottom.  All other edges will be sewn to the base.  Pin the 52" lengths to each side of the cubes, with hem at the bottom and right sides together.  Pin the 31” length to the top of the cubes, matching the dots.  Stitch between the dots.  Turn right side out.  Press all seams and top stitch in place.

Finished!

Place the boards in the pockets and you are done!
